ShelterTube® Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What makes ShelterTube® different from other portable garages?
A. ShelterTube® is engineered with a 2" x 3" industrial-grade, square-tube steel frame. Unlike standard round-tube structures, this rectangular design provides superior structural stiffness and torsional rigidity, allowing it to act as a semi-permanent, all-season building.
Q. Is the ShelterTube® wind- and snow-load-rated?
A. es. Every ShelterTube® building is engineered to meet specific wind and snow load requirements. When properly anchored according to local codes, they are rated to withstand high wind speeds and significant ground snow loads, making them reliable for year-round use.
Q. How do I know which wind and snow load ratings apply to my area?
A. While ShelterTube® is engineered for extreme weather, local building codes vary. We recommend checking with your local building department to ensure the structure meets the specific requirements for your region.
Q. Can I customize the length of my ShelterTube®?
A. Absolutely. One of the primary advantages of the ShelterTube® system is its modular design, allowing you to configure the length of your building to meet your exact space requirements, up to 99 feet.
Q. What foundation or anchoring is required for a ShelterTube®?
A. Proper anchoring is critical. For optimal performance, we recommend a concrete pad. However, the system can be securely anchored to asphalt or gravel using appropriate heavy-duty earth augers or wedge anchors. One anchor per leg is required for maximum stability.
Q. Is the ShelterTube® cover waterproof?
A. Yes. All ShelterTube® buildings feature triple-layer, 100% waterproof fabric covers. They are also UV-treated inside and out with fade blockers and anti-fungal agents to ensure long-term durability.
Q. How long do the fabric covers last?
A. Lifespan depends on the grade of fabric chosen (Standard, 14.5 oz. Heavy-Duty, or 21.5 oz. Ultra-Duty). Each grade includes a prorated warranty to provide peace of mind regarding your investment.
Q. Is the ShelterTube® fire-rated?
A. Our Heavy-Duty and Ultra-Duty covers are fire-rated and compliant with NFPA 701 standards, providing an extra layer of safety for your stored assets.
Q. Can I assemble the ShelterTube® myself?
A. Yes, the ShelterTube® is designed for DIY assembly. Due to the size and industrial nature of the components, we recommend 2–4 people for a safe and efficient installation.
Q. Does the ShelterTube® require maintenance?
A. To maintain structural integrity, we recommend regularly tightening the ratchets to keep the cover taut and clearing accumulated snow from the roof using a soft-sided tool, such as a broom or mop, from the outside of the structure.
Q. Can I use the ShelterTube® for business or equipment storage?
A. Yes. The high headroom and modular length make it an excellent, cost-effective alternative to traditional storage for heavy farm equipment, fleet vehicles, and commercial inventory.
Q. Are there different color options available?
A. Yes, depending on the fabric grade selected, ShelterTube® is available in various colors, including Gray, Green, Tan, and White, to blend with your property.
Q. What tools are needed for assembly?
A. Standard tools, including a cordless drill (for self-tapping screws), a ladder, and appropriate safety gear, are recommended. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included with your kit.
Q. What is the difference between ShelterCoat, ShelterTube, and ShelterTech?
A. ShelterCoat is our versatile, entry-level storage solution. ShelterTube is our premium, heavy-duty "Better" tier, featuring a square-tube frame and wind/snow ratings. ShelterTech is our "Best" tier, designed for professional, large-scale industrial use with the highest level of engineering.
Q. Can the doors be modified or replaced?
A. Yes. ShelterTube® includes double-zippered doors on both ends for drive-through capability. If needed, individual components, including replacement covers and doors, are available through our customer service department.
Q. Do I need a building permit?
A. Because local regulations vary, you must check with your local municipality. While many areas do not require permits for temporary structures, the wind and snow ratings of the ShelterTube® may satisfy some permitting requirements if a permanent structure is not feasible.
Q. How should I remove snow from the roof?
A. Always use a soft-sided instrument (like a broom) and work from the outside of the building. Remove snow in 4-foot sections, alternating between sides, to keep weight balanced and prevent damage.
Q. Can I use a heater inside a ShelterTube®?
A. No. For safety reasons, we do not recommend using open flames, heaters, or grills inside any fabric structure.
Q. How do I get replacement parts?
A. If you need a specific bolt, bracket, or cover, you can contact our Customer Service team or use our online Parts Request tool. Your model number, located on the inside of the cover, will help us identify exactly what you need.
Q. What is the warranty on the ShelterTube®?
A. The warranty varies by component: typically, a 1-year warranty on the cover/hardware and a 10-year prorated warranty on the steel frame. Check your specific product documentation for exact terms.
